hey i need to know how to take apart the shift knob in a 2000 volvo s40 its an automatic. the shifter knob button is sticking in the knob and have to wait a minute for it to come out in park to pull out the key. Also the orange-like gear indacator is not going with the knob it is staying in park(not to much of a biggie but would help to fix.) another thing is the boot is not sliding back up on the knob. Can you buy replacement knobs.

Another ? is about the to buttons in the console im talking about the one with the S and the W i know W= winter but what exactly does it do for your car.

What does S mean and what does it do its usually always alluminated.

Please i need quik responses.

Thank You very much.

The "S" is for sport mode -- adjusts transmission functions for a more sporty feel

The "W" is for winter mode -- (correct me if I'm wrong) I believe this starts the car out in 3rd gear to prevent tire slippage.

You can't take apart the shift knob, you can remove it and try putting some grease inside to help with the sticking button. Just pull like a mofo and it will come off.

And W, winter mode, reduces torque to prevent wheelspin by starting in 2nd gear rather than 1st. Best used for attempting to take off in ice/slush/snow.

Both of you are right -- From the 2000 S40 owner's manual:

In position D*, the gearbox starts in 3rd gear and changes up to 4th gear.

In position 3*, 2nd gear is locked and there is no change up to 3rd gear.

Be thankful you don't. You have the 5spd auto, which is a learning transmission, so if you drive aggressively it will shift aggressively, same if you cruise like grandpa, it'll be smooth as glass.
